Rakesh Sharma vs NYPD : NYCLU files lawsuit

On Jan 10, 2006, New York Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit. Their press release is at http://www.nyclu.org/sharma_pr_011006.html

Those who want to read the text of the lawsuit can go to http://www.nyclu.org/pdfs/sharma_suit_011006.pdf

I'd like to thank evryone who signed the protest petition as well as those who have supported the film.

Rakesh

Update: Both NYC and NYPD chose to settle the lawsuit out of court. NYCLU and I insisted on changes in the existing regulations, on the grounds that they restricted freedom of expression. New York city dropped its formal regulation insisting on permits (that necessiated costly insurance premium) - now documentary film-makers shooting candid-camera or cine-verite style no longer need any permits. The lawsuit was settled in Apr-May 2007 after two long years involving much legal paperwork, affidavits, my lawyers' depositions of the NYPD personnel involved and my own 8-9 hour long deposition!

If you were light skinned this never would have taken place. Color has a terrible effect on NYPD.

This post will be removed by the blog administrator, no doubt, in his tireless battle against censorship.

The city of New York was attacked by people who targeted two prominent buildings.

Sharma was very obviously and deliberately drawing suspicion on himself by focusing a videocamera for 45 minutes at the Met Life building. He is a communist anarchist, and his friends are terrorsts and terrorist sympathizers like Arjun Appadurai, who seems to have got himself kicked out of Yale university to some po-dunk dump.

The NYPD needs to arrest the whole gang and turn them over to the FBI.

The country is not safe as long as this gang is loose.

I am SHOCKED! Could Rakesh Sharma really be a terrorist? Is it true that he was continuously videotaping the MetLife Building in NYC, after all the publicity about terrorists going around doing similar things?

That sounds very ominous indeed. By the way, is he REALLY associated with the notorious communist Arjun Appadurai? U mean that pompous bully who used to teach at Yale? That's AWFUL!

Please clarify

Dear Anonymous

I take the liberty of editing spam - like the one posted here by cheap hosting, which I've decided to leave here as an example of whats edited out, in view of your allegation.

Does that constitute censorship?

Also, why hide behind the cloak of anonymity - do post your email ID so people can interact with you.

Hang in there Rakesh and stay strong.

Why don't you try and highlight this case with good people throughout the world who have a voice.

Please schedule a meet with British MP George Galloway on his weekly radio show on Talksport.net

He has a global listenership.

Rakesh, my brother, it's time now to really take your crusade global.

George is the way to go first. Im sure he would be happy to help you. Just give him a call

regards

JH
